Rewiring a house

Looking to rewire a house in Hampshire? N.D.M Electrical have a skilled team of electricians who provide specialist rewire services to homes across the Hampshire area.

Electrical wiring doesn't last forever, it is recommended that you have a rewire completed on your home every 25 years.

This is to ensure your electrical system is up to date with current wiring regulations and more importantly is running safe and efficiently. Not rewiring your home within this time could be the cause of even more complications. Rewiring a house can also provide many welcome benefits but alongside this, you can have peace of mind that your Hampshire home is safe and poses less of a risk of electrical fires and shocks.

What’s involved in rewiring a house?

Rewiring a house is a big job with a high initial investment. However the pros definitely outweigh the cons. The first thing our electricians will do is thoroughly investigate your current electrical system to identify any faults and make a detailed plan for the required works. When rewiring you can upgrade your house to better suit your needs and enhance your lifestyle. A common room that never has enough sockets is the kitchen. With so many appliances you need the sockets strategically placed and a system strong enough to power them. Another common request is plug sockets right beside a bed, near dressing tables & the addition of outdoor sockets. All of these make day to day life more enjoyable and efficient. After the plan has been designed and the customer is fully satisfied we will begin the rewire. Our rewire process is more tailored towards providing a good job rather than a quick one. We still work efficiently but we strive for perfection. If an electrician is suggesting he can rewire your 4 bed home in 1-2 days, no doubt there will be corners cut. We typically split the rewire into two stages, these are known as the first and second fix. If possible we will work from the top down, completing the rewire in circuits meaning disruption is kept to a minimum. After all wiring and your electrical system has been fitted and fully tested we will have a plasterer come in to tidy up any mess we have caused.

This process will differ slightly depending on if it's empty or lived in rewire. An empty rewire is where the homeowners stay elsewhere during the works, this will mean the process takes less time. However here at N.D.M Electrical we understand that for a lot of people this just isn't possible, we have a lot of experience working on lived-in rewires meaning we have the skills and knowledge to ensure the process runs smoothly and as stress free as possible for the customer.

5 telling signs it’s time to rewire your house

It's important for our customers to acknowledge when a rewire is necessary. Leaving these signs and hoping they will fix themselves will cause more damage in future.
  • Flickering lights: Experiencing flickering lights in several rooms of the house is a telling sign your electrical system is faulty. An inspection would be recommended.
  • Hot sockets & switches: If your sockets & switches are hot to the touch, this is again a strong indication that your electrical system needs rewiring.
  • An old house: If your house is more than 50 years old and has never upgraded, it's very likely a rewire will be required.
  • “Green goo”: If you ever notice a green liquid dripping from either your fuse-box or sockets, contact a local electrician immediately. This liquid is caused by old PVC cables and can be harmful if contact with skin is made.
  • Old fuse-box: Lastly, if your house has an older fuse-box rather than the newer version, the consumer unit it might be time for a rewire (or at least an upgrade).
